THOUSANDS of competitors took part in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival at the weekend, with runners raising cash for charities and good causes.

The full 26.2-mile race started at Holyrood Park before going out towards East Lothian, including Musselburgh.

Runners also took part in a half-marathon, a marathon relay and 10k, 5k, 2k and 1.5k races, as part of the annual festival in the Scottish capital.

The course for yesterday's marathon also took in London Road and the Leith Links area.

Since 2003, Edinburgh Marathon Festival runners have raised more than £30 million for hundreds of charities and good causes.

In a Twitter post yesterday afternoon, the Just Giving website stated that more than £1.3 million had been raised through its fundraising pages alone.

This year’s marathon winner was Boaz Kiprono from Kenya, with a provisional time of two hours and 19 minutes. The first woman to finish, also from Kenya, was Eddah Jepkosgei, in two hours and 39 minutes.
