SURFERS will gather at more than 20 beaches across Scotland to rid the coastline of litter this autumn.

More than 269,000 tonnes of plastic is said to be floating in the world’s oceans. The Surfers Against Sewage

(SAS) campaign will see members of the public comb their local beaches to clear them of bottles, bags and other litter.

Estimates suggest there are 250 plastic bottles per kilometre on the UK’s beaches. Along with cans, they make up approximately 40 per cent of all litter by volume.

In Scotland, clean-ups will take place in Banff, St Andrews, Tiree and Lossiemouth, among other locations, between next Monday and November 6.
