AN alligator wandered through a South Carolina suburb and on to the front porch of a house before climbing up the front door and appearing to reach for the doorbell.

The visit in Moncks Corner, near Charleston, was captured on video by Gary Rogers, whose daughter Danielle Barkley lives nearby.

Barkley told local media that alligators have visited the neighbourhood before and last year she saw an alligator on the front porch of another neighbour’s house.

But she said this was the first time one seemed to reach for the doorbell.

The alligator, which was several feet long, hung around for about an hour before it wandered back into the woods on its own.
