A MINIMUM school clothing grant is to be introduced across Scotland following a campaign by grassroots organisation Back To School Banks.

The network, which provides uniforms and other key supplies to children from low income families, wrote to education secretary Angela Constance in August asking her to take action to help struggling households meet the costs of kitting out their children.

Estimates suggest the average uniform costs around £150, while council grants vary and can be as low as £20 - the amount in Angus.

Now Constance has announced changes to the Education Bill to allow ministers to regulate clothing grants across the country.

She said: “It is clear from our discussions with a number of organisations there is inconsistency across Scotland. We believe by discussion with partners we can reach a more equitable position – one that guarantees a minimum school clothing grant for the children and young people who need it most.”

Councils will be banned from cutting the school week to balance the books
