SUPERMARKET giant Asda is to bring its “wonky veg” scheme to Scotland after appeals by shoppers.

The retailer introduced boxes of misshapen produce to 128 branches, selling a mix of potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, peppers, cabbages, onions, leeks and parsnips for £3.50.

The trial began on Friday but no Scottish branches were included.

Since then the grocery chain has been inundated with requests from shoppers and will now roll out the boxes north of the Border.

A spokesperson said: “We have received some amazing feedback from our customers. We’re working closely with farmers to roll this out to more stores and in higher volumes in the next few weeks, so more customers can get their hands on knobbly veg.”

Dunfermline and West Fife MP Douglas Chapman, one of those who contacted Asda, said: “I’m delighted to discover that Asda is to bring its wonky veg box trial to Scotland ... It seems odd not even one store north of the Border was being used to take part in it.”
