A PETITION launched by the SNP after MPs voted in favour of military action against Daesh in Syria hit 80,000 signatures last night, writes Janice Burns.

Around 10,000 people who signed the petition calling on the UK Government to reconsider air strikes in Syria were not SNP party members.

Within four hours 40,000 people had put their names to the petition and within 24 hours the number was creeping towards the 100,000 mark.

MPs voted by 397 to 223 on Wednesday night in favour of extending British action to quash Daesh – a majority of 174.

Fifty seven of Scotland’s 59 MPs voted against the bombings.

The SNP petition states: “Despite all SNP MPs voting against air strikes on Syria, the House of Commons has agreed to back the UK Government’s call for military action.

“The SNP believes that the UK should not repeat the mistakes of the past, and engage in military action without a comprehensive and credible plan to win peace.”

Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth left to join the air strikes yesterday.

SNP MPs voiced their objections to the vote on Twitter, with ex-First Minister Alex Salmond MP tweeting that Scotland “rejected the air strikes”.

SNP Business Convenor Derek Mackay MSP said: “The decision made by the House of Commons to vote in favour of air strikes in Syria has been met with public disapproval across Scotland. It is no wonder people are so angry – the House of Commons voted to give the green light for military action with key questions unanswered and without any compre- hensive plan for peace and reconstruction.”
