A FORMER Labour MP has described Labour’s manifesto in Scotland as “self-immolation for dummies”.

Thomas Docherty, who was formerly MP for Dunfermline and West Fife, said the General Election result last year in Scotland was Labour’s worst performance since 1918.

He said: “We only polled 24.3 per cent of the vote. All the indications tonight is that we have gone further backwards from that and I don’t even think the records show a result as bad as this in the 110-plus years of the Labour Party’s history in Scotland.

“So it’s quite clear that we’ve had a very bad result tonight.”

Docherty admitted that Labour was now fighting with the Tories for second place.

“The swing that we have seen tonight has been away from Labour and towards the Conservative Party. Something like seven out of 10, perhaps three quarters of Scots, have voted for a centre or centre-right party.”

He added that the party had to face that “hard reality” with its tax-raising and anti-trident manifesto.

“The manifesto we stood on is self-immolation for dummies,” he said.

Docherty was trending on Twitter within minutes of savaging his own party.
