Facebook has come under fire from angry Scots after the social media platform added a Union Jack emoji to status updates about Burns Nights.


Users choosing that most Scottish of events from a list of celebrations in Facebook’s “what you’re doing or how you’re feeling” option are greeted with the familiar red, white and blue of the Union Jack.


National reader Kenny Lowe complained directly to Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook do have a saltire emoji. It had to be developed last November after they mistakenly offered user the Romanian flag to celebrate St Andrew’s Day.

The social network regularly suggests users update their status to tell family and friends they are celebrating birthdays, national holidays and other events.

Though the social media platform admitted to the mistake with the flag and amended, there was some logic in that decision, St Andrew is also a patron saint of Romania.


Facebook told The National they were looking into the matter.
