A SCOTTISH town is toasting stellar success after being named Europe’s first Dark Sky Town.

It has taken three years for Moffat in Dumfries and Galloway to win the out-of-this-world accolade, but local officials say the title could transform its fortunes.

Councillor Colin Smyth said: “The accolade of being the first Dark Sky Town in Europe is an outstanding achievement. It is clear that the dedication of all involved and years of work have paid off.

“Our Council is committed to supporting the local economy and by working together with communities such as Moffat, the region’s tourism businesses can capitalise on our fantastic natural assets.

“The award of Dark Sky Town will encourage more visitors to experience what Dumfries and Galloway has to offer during the winter months, helping to boost our local economy during these periods.”

The International Dark Sky Association awarded the status last week, making Moffat the first Dark Sky Town outside America.

The title comes after the town switched its street lighting to eco-friendly LED bulbs which direct light down, preventing “spillage” upwards towards the stars. The new arrangement uses just one third of the energy needed to power the old system and was installed with Scottish Government funding.

No estimate has been placed on the expected economic boost, but it is hoped the news will encourage more people to visit the area to take in the stars over the town and in the Dark Sky Park in the Galloway Forest, which was also the first in Europe.

Smyth said: “Magnificent tourist attractions such as the Dark Sky Park and now the first ever Dark Sky Town really set our region apart.”
