A DOG, a lizard and four bunnies had to be rescued during the bank holiday after they were abandoned by their owners.

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after the animals were found in Edinburgh and the Lothians last weekend.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was first alerted on Saturday, April 30, when a Lhasa apso dog was found tied to a lamppost at Priestfield Road in Edinburgh.

The Scottish SPCA was then contacted on Monday, when a gecko was spotted in a skip at Straiton Retail Park and then again, when four baby rabbits were abandoned in woodland in Mayfield.

All the animals were taken to the charity’s animal rescue and rehoming centre in Balerno.

Centre assistant manager Kenny Sharpe said: “The Lhasa apso, who we’ve named Bob, is a fawn coloured, un-neutered male and is a friendly guy. He is in reasonable body condition but does have some matting on his legs and ears.

“Bob had been tied to a lamppost for around two hours and there was no sign of any owner, so we are asking anyone who recognises him to contact us.

“The baby rabbits are around five to six weeks old and were cruelly dumped in a plastic container in a wooded area.

“Sadly, one of the rabbits had seriously swollen eyelids, which were sealed shut.

“Although there was initially some improvement, its condition seriously deteriorated and a vet advised that the kindest decision was to put it to sleep to relieve its suffering.

“Our gecko, who we’ve named Skippy, is a bit of a mystery as we’re not sure how he came to be in the skip.

“He is very thin but is bright and alert.”

Sharpe added: “It’s possible he was deliberately put inside the skip or he may have strayed from home and ended up in there. The finder took him to the nearby Pets at Home store in case he had gone missing from there, but this wasn’t the case.”
