A SCOTTISH firm that makes pizza ovens and operates across the globe has said that around one in four of its workforce will be cut.

The outdoor pizza oven manufacturing firm Ooni, which has its headquarters in Edinburgh, said it decided to make staff members redundant this week to "refocus" its business strategy.

Workers were informed on Monday that a total of 75 roles globally were being "removed" – 45 of which are based in the UK.

The company has two sites in Scotland, one in Edinburgh and one in Broxburn, and has around 300 employees worldwide, including sites in the US and Germany.

Ooni has confirmed the staff who are affected will be notified on Thursday.

A spokesperson for Ooni said: “We’re incredibly proud to have built a global business, shaped through the passion of our customers and employees.

“However, market conditions necessitate a refocus of Ooni’s strategy and structure in line with our future business objectives.

“Whilst we have tried very hard to avoid this situation, on Monday we informed the team that we will be removing 75 roles globally; 45 of which are in the UK.

“A voluntary redundancy package has been offered to all staff, with the impacted roles communicated on Thursday April 25.

“We appreciate this will be difficult for our people and we are fully committed to supporting our employees during this period of necessary change."

Ooni was founded in 2012 and is a specialist in portable wood pellet-burning stoves for the outdoors.

All the ovens are designed in Scotland but are made in China.
