The National:

LINE of Duty star Martin Compston has expertly dealt with yet another troll who implied that he did not have a right to comment on Scottish politics as he does not live in Scotland.

Compston was forced to deal with a barrage of posts from “Scottish Tory twitter and their bots” after he took part in an online SNP rally looking to “Get the Vote Out” ahead of today’s elections.

Commenting on an STV post about Compston’s support for the SNP, Tory MSP Murdo Fraser wrote: “Another ‘celeb’ who doesn’t live here telling us how to vote.”

Douglas Lumsden, a Tory councillor in Aberdeen who is also running to be an MSP, also commented. Lumsden wrote: “From his Las Vegas mansion.”

He also shared a story from The Sun about Compston’s “mansion” in the US, which cost a reported £300,000. The average house price in the UK is currently £251,000, according to the latest government data.

However, those Tories were put down in a devastating tweet from the Line of Duty actor.

He shared a photo of Conservative election materials, including the smiling face of Douglas Ross and not-so-smiling face of Ruth Davidson (who isn’t even running), posted to his address in Greenock.

In a tweet which has more than 30,000 likes, Compston wrote: “I see Scottish Tory twitter and their bots enraged an actor would express an opinion. Apparently it isn’t valid either as they claim I don’t live here.

“In that case could you do me, the postman and the environment a favour and stop sending me literature asking for my vote.”

Another post saw one Twitter user rage at the actor for not wanting to live in a “hate filled” Scotland as he would have to pay higher taxes. It ended by calling him a “hypocrite”.

Compston responded: “Hey Susan hope yer in tip top form, I know it doesn’t fit the hate the Indy actor narrative but I pay top rate tax in Scotland, always have. Not through a company as is my right and would substantially lower my tax.

“I believe those who earn a bit more should pay a bit more.”

Now, another troll who apparently missed all of that has taken a pop at the actor, only to be soundly rebuffed.

The Twitter user, named “10 can Dan” who had previously labelled the SNP "poisonous bastards", wrote: “Hi mate just saw your video for the SNP, quick question, what part of Scotland do you stay now? @martin_compston”

In a response that must now be getting repetitive for him, Compston replied: “Currently staying in Edinburgh where I’m working for next 4 months but I’ll get back to my place in Greenock on my days off Dan.

“Anything else I can help you with? My movements over the next week? My plans for the weekend? It’s my birthday so I’ll be out if you need a heads up.”

Dan quickly responded that he had “been done here”, and shared a photo asking for an urgent exit from the situation.
