WELSH Secretary Simon Hart discovered the Home Office had put asylum seekers into a military training camp in his seat "by accident" through Facebook comments.

Simon Hart said the Home Office had failed to show "enough" respect to the Welsh Government or the area.

Protests have been held outside Penally camp since it emerged that up to 230 people will be housed there.

Some men have already been taken to the premises and First Minister Mark Drakeford said it has become a target for "hard-right extremists".

Speaking on BBC Radio Wales today, Hart said he was not officially informed of the controversial move, calling it "not a satisfactory situation for anybody concerned".

Hart, who represents Carmarthen East and South Pembrokeshire, said: "I've taken it up with Priti Patel on three, if not four, occasions now, plus the Immigration Minister.

The National:

"The policy I can understand, and I understand the difficulty with Covid and finding Covid-compliant accommodation.

"I understand the difficulties at the moment over transport and all the things which have led to this.

"But the fact is that we all discovered completely by accident because of some comments on Facebook. There was no official contact.

"The practical application of this particular saga wasn't handled particularly well and the Home Office have actually admitted that.

"Whether it would've made any difference to the final decision is debateable but it's not really the point.

"We shouldn't be discovering these things by accident and by the fact that somebody posted something on Facebook."

Patel is expected to announced a major overhaul of the UK immigration system in a Tory Party conference speech this afternoon.
