A WOMAN on Question Time has been praised for saying Scotland is the only part of the UK effectively tackling knife crime.
The grandmother of 14 told the Tottenham panel that Scotland is the only country "taking a stance".
She said: "The only place that has taken a stance to say they are really going to do something about it is Scotland. They have got off their backsides and done something and you lot ain't doing nothing."
The Scottish Violence Reduction Unit, a national centre of expertise on violence, was set up by Strathclyde Police in 2005, the same year Scotland was found to be the most violent country in the developing world.
It works in partnership with Police Scotland and the Scottish Government.
Saying knife crime has been an issue for 20 years, the woman added: "It's now spiralling out of control and you're sitting round here talking.
"What is it going to take for the MPs to sit down and say something has got to be done?
"Has it got to be your son or your daughter that's got to be killed for you to deal with it?
"We are fed up of seeing our parents crying. As adults we are not supposed to be burying our children, our children are supposed to be burying us.
"I've got 14 grandchildren and I'm so scared, so scared. It's not only London, it's happening in Manchester, Birmingham up and down the UK.
"You lot ain't doing nothing – and this is what I'm working for to pay my taxes to sit down and watch you lot every year take a £2000 pay rise when people are out there suffering.
"Your own soldiers are sleeping on the street that went and served in the war. You lot don't give a damn about nobody other than yourselves."

This grandmother says she is “so scared” and tells politicians they need to get something done about knife crime. #bbcqt pic.twitter.com/DJlXRGYwCt
Twitter users praised the woman for recognising that the Scottish Government takes a public health approach to knife crime.

Watch this. This woman lets rip on knife crime, and asks why Scotland is the only part of the UK that is dealing with it. Incredibly powerful moment.https://t.co/wfnJiKiiJ0

This woman mentioned Scotland because she has had to look into knife crime. Think about that. She, in fear for her grandchildren, has been looking into knifecrime prevention & saw Scotland has had success where her area has failed.

She's the kind of person we need to see more of on QT. She has no hidden agenda so she tells it like it is and she CAN bring herself to praise Scotland for its record on knife crime, unlike politicians, because she KNOWS it's being done right. Well said! 👏

It’s important to mention that in Scotland they saw they couldn’t police their way out of the knife crime epidemic and took a public health approach. It made a difference. https://t.co/44t2pegSFE

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
