DRUGS, feminism and making Dundee a more liveable city are on the agenda as the University of Dundee’s Festival of the Future kicks off today.

According to Anna Day, the university’s cultural projects manager, the five days of debates, design, music and arts are aimed at getting the city talking about its future.

“Dundee is changing around us,” she said. “What can we learn from other cities and each other, is not only crucial for the future of this city, but also for the future of each and every one of us.

“We have some truly fantastic debates lined up, covering the sustainability of cities, the reliability of forensic science and drug-death crisis.”

The daily debates start with Future Cities, a panel event at Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA), which questions the need to balance the desire for modernisation with Dundee’s industrial past.

Award-winning author Chris Brookmyre and his wife Marisa Haetzman will also discuss their new writing partnership to bring us Ambrose Parry, the hot new name in historical fiction.
