EXPORTS to EU countries support around 130,000 jobs in Scotland, according to new research.
A report by leading think-tank, the Fraser of Allander Institute, also revealed exports to countries in the EU support around 40,000 jobs in Glasgow and the surrounding areas.
The research was commissioned by Glasgow City Council ahead of a Brexit summit.
The report said: “Exports to the EU are estimated to support over 130,000 jobs in Scotland through direct demand and wider spillovers into the Scottish economy.
“Based upon an illustrative apportionment of such activity across Scotland’s regions, we estimate that the Glasgow City Region makes up around 40,000 of these jobs – with almost 20,000 jobs in Glasgow City alone.”
Bob Doris, MSP for Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn, said: “The European single market – which is around eight times bigger than the UK market alone – is of enormous importance to the Scottish economy.
“This new analysis underlines just how important that market is to Glasgow, and how reckless the Tories are behaving by dragging us closer and closer to a disastrous hard Brexit outside the single market or an even more extreme No Deal Brexit.
“The Tories think they can do what they want to Scotland and get away with it – recklessly gambling with Scottish jobs due to their own petty squabbles.
“It’s time for the Tories to change course on Brexit and back our continued membership of the single market.”
