ARTIST Astrid Jaekel has given a Scots town a makeover ahead of its 20th annual book festival.

Wigtown is swimming with fish and peppered with teapots after the Edinburgh woman papered the town with images related to local commerce.

Unique wallpapers linked to current and former businesses have been plastered on the exteriors of several buildings.

The result is expected to delight visitors during the ten-day Wigtown Book Festival, which begins on Friday.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the annual event.

Jaekel said: “People find the town charming and are often curious to find out more about it.

“These designs have all been created to say something about what the places have been, and the things they have seen, past and present.”

Adrian Turpin, the festival’s artistic director, said: “We wanted to do something really special to celebrate the story of the town for its 20th festival and Astrid’s artwork does this in a really fun and stylish way.

“It will make a fantastic backdrop for an event that is bringing brilliant national, international and regional literature and poetry to south west Scotland.”

The festival runs until September 30 and the artwork will be in place for around one month.
