AT least 29 people have been killed and 81 wounded after a suicide bombing inside a Shia mosque in eastern Afghanistan.

Two attackers blew themselves up inside a mosque in the eastern Paktia provincial capital of Gardez, according to Abdullah Asrat, a spokesman for the provincial governor.

Five of the seriously wounded were small children, Asrat said.

The bombers opened fire on the mosque’s guards, then detonated explosives while the mosque was packed with around 100 worshippers attending weekly prayers yesterday, on the Muslim sabbath.

No-one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but a Daesh affiliate in Afghanistan has targeted Shia worshippers in the past and warned them that their houses of worship would be targeted.

Shia Muslims make up around 10% of Afghanistan’s population.
