AN SNP MSP is spearheading a campaign that will see 15 bookmaker shops sign up for the White Ribbon campaign working to eradicating gender based violence.

Bob Doris will meet with key partners ahead of a street campaign launch today outside Tesco on Maryhill Road, Glasgow.

It will mark the start of a week of action that will run at 15 bookies’ shops in Maryhill and Springburn. Participating William Hill and Ladbrokes Coral shops will ask men who enter their stores to sign the White Ribbon Scotland pledge to “never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women in all its forms”.

Doris was inspired by local initiatives, including the Glasgow North West Women’s Centre and Springburn-based Glasgow Kelvin College, which has become White Ribbon Scotland accredited.

He said: “It is crucial that all men, the majority of whom would never dream of perpetrating gender based violence, take a vocal stand against those who do. In doing so, we don’t just reinforce the unacceptable nature of violence against women and girls, we hopefully also create male role models to inspire others.”
