NICOLA Sturgeon has branded Theresa May's attempt to start MPs' summer holidays early as a "desperate" attempt to save her own skin.

The government announced plans to bring the start of recess forward after May caved in to the hardline Brexiteers yesterday over her Chequers proposal for a softer Brexit.

The Prime Minister has announced that she intends to start MPs' summer holiday on Thursday this week, instead of Tuesday next week.

An earlier break would give May the opportunity to send would-be plotters away from Westminster.

However, the First Minister slammed the decision on Twitter.

She claimed: "Trying to force an early holiday to save their own skins is the desperate act of a useless UK government with no concern whatsoever for the best interests of the country - and fast running out of road."

Suggestion that MPs take extra time off during one of the most critical - and busiest - periods in recent parliamentary history has gone down badly even in her own party.

Some Tory backbenchers said they will vote against the motion including former Pro-EU Tory Phillip Lee, who quit as a minister over Brexit.
