CAMPAIGNERS carpeted a landmark with welcome mats in Glasgow yesterday on World Refugee Day.

Messages of solidarity and friendship were also read out at George Square, where a host of charities worked together to “send a strong message to the world that Scotland welcomes refugees”.

They included Amnesty International, Oxfam Scotland, Refuweegee and and the Scottish Refugee Council.

Naomi McAuliffe, Amnesty International’s Scotland programme director, said: “No-one chooses to be a refugee, to risk their losing their families or their lives on dangerous journeys to unknown destinations. “On World Refugee Day, let’s remember that, and focus on the things that connect us as human beings such as our names and personal stories.”

She added: “We must stand together in solidarity to welcome refugees and refuse to let fear and prejudice win.”
