Self-awareness can be a tricky thing, as Alastair Campbell found out today.
Leading Brexiteer Arron Banks had taken aim at journalist Carole Cadwalladr for calling Nigel Farage "on false pretences".
So you rang through on false pretences. Sums up your entire approach to journalism! https://t.co/N7hHuC41N4

A friend had managed to get through to the former Ukip leader, but he put the phone down on Cadwalladr when she tried to ask him questions.
Banks lashed out at the journalist on Twitter, prompting a response from infamous Labour spin doctor Campbell, who is pro-EU.
It was an understandable reaction, especially given Banks's other antics today ... but his line of attack was quite something.
As opposed to destroying a country on false pretences you muppet https://t.co/yNGOzhospB

Campbell came back with one of the most hypocritical tweets of all time.
Staggeringly, the man forever associated with the release of the "dodgy dossier" that was used to justify war in Iraq failed to see the irony of his remark.
Fortunately, Twitter users were there to give him a heads-up.

Some might say brexiteers "sexed up" a "dodgy dossier" in which they warned the EU could "launch WMDs in 45 minutes" oh no wait that was you wasn't it?

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
