One day after the Growth Commission Report was published, we brought you 18 pages of analysis. Now, we didn't expect every other daily to follow suit, but surely it was still worthy of front-page coverage?
Not for the Scottish Daily Mail...
Now data mining has been a hot topic recently, and is worthy of the coverage, but creating the perfect wildlife garden??
At least the other papers decided to cover it, however small and however they chose to spin it.
If you look closely you can just about make out The Scottish Sun's coverage.
There's also a royal wedding pull-out if you're sick to the back teeth of independence chat and want extensive coverage of something that hasn't been in the media much recently.
Similarly, the Daily Record has decided to give just a little of the space on its front page to the report.
Our favourite, though, has to be the line taken by the Scottish Daily Express, which has gone for a Tory sound bite as their lead.
The quote is from former Scots Tory MEP Struan Stevenson ... me neither ... who goes on to say that Scottish independence would make Brexit look like "a picnic in the park”!
...
...
Sorry, I wrote that last line 20 minutes ago and have been laughing since.
To get serious for a second, we are realistic enough to know that it won't all be plain sailing on the road to independence, but we believe that this report confronts the realities of the challenges ahead.
And while we welcome the coverage given to the report by the following publicaitons, we disagree with the overly negative lines they have taken.
Finally, we at The National have championed the positive aspects of the report, but at the same time we have carried a lot of comment and analysis, some of which is critical of parts of the 354-page document.
A more balanced approach was also taken by The Herald, whose headline underlined that all of this is taking place amid the chaos of Brexit.
And, in case you missed it, here's our effort at the end of a week in which we brought you sneak previews of the report.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
