Queen Victoria and her Tragic Family, C5, 9.15pm

AS fans of Netflix drama The Crown will know, balancing personal feelings with royal duties can be a difficult act, and there was a period in the 1860s when it seemed that Queen Victoria hadn’t got it right. Devastated by the loss of her husband Prince Albert in 1861, she shut herself away for much of the subsequent decade, struggling to perform her responsibilities not just as a queen but as a mother. This documentary looks at how Victoria complained about her eldest son’s frivolous lifestyle, without acknowledging that his public appearances were in reality helping to distract her subjects from noticing her own absence.
