The National:

THE Scottish Tories are renowned for their ability to blame anything and everything on independence – actually, even the mere fact of discussing a referendum can apparently cause chaos to reign.

(You'd think they'd avoid attending events dedicated to the discussion of it for that reason, but apparently not. Could it be that they're hypocrites?!)

At First Minister's Questions today, Dean Lockhart took it upon himself to stretch the Tory brass-neck out as far as it goes.

The SNP's Richard Lochhead had asked a question about the impact of a post-Brexit trade deal with the US on the Scotch whisky industry.

Understandably, Nicola Sturgeon stressed the need to protect Scotland's brand, and to defend geographical indicators.

And would you believe it, the Tories (who are definitely not obsessed with independence) managed to link that question to ... independence.

The imminent publication of the Growth Commission report, setting out the positive economic case for an independent Scotland, seems to us a good thing.

Apparently, it poses a huge threat to Scotch exports to the US. The First Minister was quick to point out the embarrassment of even the Tory frontbench at the question.
