YET more cuts have been confirmed at high street giants as Marks & Spencer (M&S) and Tesco reveal closure plans.

M&S named East Kilbride and Falkirk stores as amongst 14 set to go as part of a five-year turnaround effort that will see more than 100 branches wiped from its portfolio by 2022.

A period of consultation with the 870 staff employed at the first 14 units will now take place.

Sacha Berendji, retail and property director at M&S, said: "We are making good progress with our plans to reshape our store estate to be more relevant to our customers and support our online growth plans.

"Closing stores isn't easy but it is vital for the future of M&S.

"Where we have closed stores, we are seeing an encouraging number of customers moving to nearby stores and enjoying shopping with us in a better environment, which is why we're continuing to transform our estate with pace."

Meanwhile, supermarket Tesco has put 500 jobs on the line as it announces plans to close its non-food website Tesco Direct.

The chain said there was "no route to profitability for this small, loss-making part of the business" and the site will cease trading on July 9, with its Milton Keynes fulfilment centre also going.
