MORE English voters want Nicola Sturgeon as their Prime Minister than Michael Gove.

A Panelbase poll of English voters, commissioned by Wings Over Scotland, offered nine options for who they would prefer to see as UK Prime Minister.

Scotland's First Minister received 4% of the vote, while Gove scored only 1% – below even Donald Trump's 2%.

None of the above topped the poll with 29%, followed by Jeremy Corbyn (23%), Theresa May (19%), Boris Johnson (10%), Jacob Rees-Mogg (7%) and Vince Cable (4%).

It comes amid rumours of Theresa May planning a new general election this year.

Publishing the results, Wings Over Scotland said: "Gove was preferred by fewer English voters – and we’ll emphasise again that this was a poll of exclusively English voters – than Vince Cable, Nicola Sturgeon or Donald Trump.

"The SNP leader, who doesn’t run for the UK parliament, secured three times as many votes as Gove despite the fact that he’s actually the 5/1 joint second-favourite with Ladbrokes as we write this."

It comes on the same day Gove spoke at the Union and Unionism event hosted by Policy Exchange.

At the event, he said Brexit had resulted in Britain becoming "more welcome to migration", and that diversity was a feature of Unionism.

The comments are despite ongoing criticism of the Tory party over its "hostile environment" approach to immigration.
