FIRST it was Union Jackery, now it’s Markle and Sparkle, as M&S rebrands for tomorrow’s royal wedding.

In the process the retailer has again snubbed Scotland, and most of northern UK.

Marks & Spencer is to rebrand itself Markle & Sparkle as Prince Harry marries Meghan Markle.

Forgetting that the bride is American – even though she is now a British citizen – the retailer is going wild with Union Jackery. Interestingly the change will not affect any Scottish branches, much to the relief of most people north of the Border.

It’s the latest M&S insult, the worst of which was when National reader Edith Davidson was told by its customer service team: “I am able to inform you that the National Scottish Referendum has taken place and the majority of Scotland decided that the lovely country of Scotland would belong in and stay within the UK and will be a part of the country known as England.”

M&S subsequently apologised, and later apologised for the way they branded Scotch whisky. As The National reported yesterday, according to the Tories, the Scottish Government “leaned” on M&S to correct their website to show that the true origin of their “British” whisky is, in fact, Scotland.

Now the company breathlessly informs us that “the Windsor branch of M&S is a focus of the rebrand, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to pass the store following their nuptials at St George’s Chapel on Saturday”.

“The store is featuring a sparkly Markle & Sparkle fascia, with windows decked out in the colours of the Union flag,” they added.

The retailer said the rebrand – which will also involve a town crier and a ceremonial ribbon-cut performed by recently wed M&S characters Percy and Penny Pig – is its way of capturing the excitement of welcoming a “real-life Hollywood princess”.
