HOME Secretary Amber Rudd has resigned from her position, Downing Street has confirmed.

Rudd was due to make a statement in Parliament tomorrow but has sensationally quit amid growing calls for her to resign over the Windrush scandal.

She faced criticism after the revelation of immigration removal targets – targets she initially claimed didn't exist.

Rudd subsequently admitted the targets existed but that she wasn't aware of them, but the pressure grew after a newspaper revealed that she had received email correspondence that mentioned the targets.

A No 10 spokesman said: "The Prime Minister has tonight accepted the resignation of the Home Secretary."

Rudd was thought to be preparing to tough it out, insisting she genuinely did not know about the targets when she gave evidence to the Commons Home Affairs Committee last week.

However having seen mounting evidence in the paperwork about the extent of the knowledge within the Home Office about the targets she decided that she should take responsibility and go.
