EDINBURGH is home to a new concept in community garaging that aims to tackle the capital’s infamous problems with motorcycle damage and theft.

Moto Stable, a new concept offering bikers safe parking within the city centre, already has a growing membership who each have 24/7 access through a Pure Gym pincode entry system

Launched by Edinburgh resident and motorcycle owner, Callum McPherson, 26, the physical space on Abbeyhill is addressing the increasing challenge of owning a motorbike in urban locations.

Last year, in Edinburgh alone, 4530 crimes were recorded in the category of “theft of a motor vehicle”, with 30,535 reported incidents of vandalism related to motor vehicles.

Members join up to receive a secure indoor parking space where they can keep their bike permanently, as well as access to a growing workshop and community space.

McPherson said: “After my cheap learner bike was vandalised repeatedly outside my flat in Edinburgh, I didn’t want to commit to a more expensive machine until I had somewhere safe to store it.

“It didn’t make sense to me that people would buy something as valuable as a Rolex, for example, and leave it outside on the street.

“Most people that live in Edinburgh do not have their own garage and private lockups tend to be expensive, hard to come by and insecure,” he added.

“As I became increasingly aware of the problem affecting urban bikers I started to look for suitable venues to create a community garage for bikers, the kind of which exists already in the US. Now with our first space filling up, we are already looking for our second premises in a different part of town so we can reach even more people.”
