The National:

Let's be honest...

It was only a matter of time until a Tory MSP submitted a fawning, sycophantic motion in Holyrood drawing attention to the new Royal baby - as if any of us could have missed his arrival.

Thankfully, Green MSP Patrick Harvie was on hand to submit an amendment that would provide, in his words, a little "context".

Singling out just one of the many births that took place yesterday, Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Alexander Stewart fired off a motion to congratulate Catherine and Prince William on the birth of their child.

Obviously, there's nothing wrong in congratulating a couple on the birth of their sprog...but a little bit of self-awareness wouldn't go amiss.

Harvie's amendment seeks to acknowledge that while the prince has been born into a life of excessive privilege, of the thousands of others born yesterday 30 per cent will instead face poverty from their first breath.

The amendment goes on to scorn media outlets who are "fetishising privilege and fawning over those who enjoy it", as well as noting that scandalous levels of poverty will continue as long as they do so.

It's not surprising that a Tory MSP would choose to acknowledge the birth of a royal baby while ignoring those affected by their own policies.

At the very least, Harvie's amendment will force them to confront their failures.
