A Scottish Tory MP's attempt to attack The National and SNP MP Tommy Sheppard backfired spectacularly ... and within just 2 minutes.
Ross Thomson, the Jacob Rees-Mogg enthusiast MP for Aberdeen South who backs a devastating Hard Brexit for Scotland, launched a broadside at Sheppard for not making it to today's Scottish Affairs Committee meeting in Westminster.
We reported last week (you can read the full story here) that Tory, Labour and LibDem MPs all failed to show up for a Committee hearing on immigration in Kirkcaldy. It was attended only by SNP MPs.
So Thomson, seeing that Sheppard wasn't attending the Westminster meeting today, decided to aim a tweet at the MP for Edinburgh East.
Hey @ScotNational and @Ivan_McKee @IanBlackfordMP 👋 @TommySheppard is “posted missing”at @CommonsScotAffs today. Where we are discussing unfair and discriminatory delivery charges in Scotland. What do you have to say about that? Could he not be bothered? #dayjob

There was just one problem. Sheppard was off ill and had given his apologies to the chair of the committee last night.
I'm actually ill and had given my apologies late last night, If you'd bother to check with the chair or a clerk you'd know that but thanks for your concern.

At last week's meeting in Kirkcaldy the Unionist MPs had a range of flimsy excuses for not attending. Funny how they manage to make the meetings in London no problem...
This isn't the first time recently that Unionist MPs have attacked their SNP rivals for being unwell and unable to work.
Thomson, who is one the UK's most fervent Brexiteers despite representing an Aberdeen consituency which will be one of the hardest hit by leaving the EU, was quick to row back on his attack.
Very sorry you are ill. Hope you recover quickly. Given I submitted my apologies in advance, like you, yet @IanBlackfordMP and others felt the need to comment on it I just thought they should know. Wouldn’t want them to be hypocritical now 🙄

Next time, Ross, think before you tweet!
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
