Elise Christie

Age: 27

From: Livingston

Event: short-track speed skating

Begins competing: 10th February

Christie’s travails of the 2014 Winter Olympics are well-documented; she suffered disqualification from all three of her events in Sochi and has admitted in the intervening four years that such was her heartbreak, she considered quitting the sport for good.

However, she stuck with it and has rebounded in spectacular fashion, breaking the 500m world record in 2016 before becoming triple World Champion the following year.

Pyeongchang will be her third Olympic Games and he goes in as one of Team GB’s best chances to win gold – and if she skates to her best, there is every chance she will become a multiple medallist.

Kathryn Thomson

Age: 22

From: Kilmarnock

Event: short-track speed skating

Begins competing: 10th February

Thomson will make her Olympic debut in Pyeongchang and will compete in the 500m, 1000m and 1500m.

She may not have been to a major Games before but the Nottingham-based skater did compete in the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in 2013 which will have given her a taste of a multi-sport event, where she was also the flag-bearer for the Closing Ceremony.

A former British Junior champion, she was part of the British team that won relay silver at the European Championships in 2014.

Team Muirhead

Eve Muirhead, Anna Sloan, Vicki Adams, Lauren Gray, Kelly Schafer.

Begin competing: 14th February

Pyeongchang is Muirhead’s third Olympic Games and having won bronze in 2014, the 27 year-old is eager to improve on that this time around.

Muirhead and her rink are in good form – 2017 saw them win World Championship bronze before following that up by becoming European champions.

British curlers haven’t won gold since Rhona Martin famously became Olympic champion in 2002 but Muirhead is keep to stop that rot.

The curling competition is long and arduous – it lasts 11 days – but Muirhead’s experience will play to her advantage.

Team Smith

Kyle Smith, Thomas Muirhead, Kyle Waddell, Cammy Smith, Glen Muirhead.

Begin competing: 14th February

The men’s curling team is quite family affair, with both the Muirhead and the Smith brothers included in the 5-man team.

All five men will make their Olympic debut in Pyeongchang but despite this, they are not short of experience.

Skip Kyle Smith is a former World Junior champion and while the men’s team are not as fancied for a medal as the women’s, they are in the form of their lives having won European Championships silver last year.

Murray Buchan

Age: 26

From: Edinburgh

Event: Freestyle skiing - halfpipe

Begin competing: February 20

Buchan will be making his second Olympic games appearance next week after being a part of Team GB in 2014, the first time that halfpipe had been included in the Olympic programme.

He ultimately finished in 17th position in Sochi but after a raft of top-21 finishes in World Cup events over the past couple of years, his sights are set much higher this time, with a top-10 finish what he is aiming for.

Alex Tilley

Age: 24

From: Aberdeenshire

Event: Alpine skiing – slalom and giant slalom

Begin competing: 12th February

Tilley will make her Olympic debut next week but she is unlikely to find herself out of her depth. She has established herself as a regular on the World Cup circuit this season, even picking up a top-15 finish in giant slalom just before Christmas.

Tilley will also compete in the Alpine Team event, which will appear at the Games for the first time. The quartet will be made up of Tilley, compatriot Charlie Guest and the English pair of Dave Ryding and Laurie Taylor.

Charlie Guest

Age: 24

From: Perth

Event: Alpine skiing – slalom

Begins competing: 14th February

Guest has had quite a time of things in recent years. She broke her back in a training accident in 2014 but she recovered in remarkable fashion and has won the British slalom title for the past two years.

These Games will be her first-ever Olympic appearance and having win an FIS event in Finland in November, she is in good form. As will Alex Tilley, Guest will also compete in the Alpine Team event.

Andrew Young

Age: 25

From: Huntly

Event: Cross-country skiing

Begins competing: 11th February

This will be a third Olympic Games for Young. He struggled with illness at the start of the season, but is now back to his best form and in his last three events he has returned with finishes inside the top 15.

He finished 60th in the individual sprint at Vancouver 2010 and followed that up with 36th in the 15km classic four years later.

But having performed well in the World Cups last year, as well as finishing in 22nd place in the freestyle sprint final at 2017 World Championships, he will be setting his sights higher this time around.

Callum Smith

Age: 25

From: Huntly

Event: Cross-country skiing

Begins competing: 11th February

Norway-based Smith will be making his second Olympic appearance having competed at the Games in 2014. In Sochi, he was the fifth youngest skier in the 68-strong field, ultimately finishing 62nd in the 30km skiathlon, which was his first-ever Olympic race before coming 67th in the 15km classical.

This time around he has considerably more experienced and so will have his sights set higher, but competing against nations which consider cross-country skiing to be one of their national sports is no easy feat.

Andrew Musgrave

Age: 27

From: Huntly

Event: Cross-country skiing

Begins competing: 11th February

Musgrave is one of GB’s best medal chances and with the experience of two previous Olympic Games in the bank, he knows what to expect when he gets to Pyeongchang.

He shot to the world’s attention in 2014 when he won the prestigious Norwegian Championships, beating a host of Scandinavians in the process, and he underlined his ability once again by finishing in fourth place in last year’s World Championships.

Cross-country skiing is a battle of wills as much as anything else but the Norway-based skier can push himself to the limit as effectively as anyone and could well grab a spot on the podium if all goes to plan on the day.
