SNP Westminster group leader Ian Blackford has accused Jeremy Corbyn of "stunning hypocrisy" after he sent a congratulatory tweet to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

ICAN were formally awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Sunday, in recognition of their global work to ban nuclear weapons.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted "Congrats to @NuclearBan on receiving its well-deserved Nobel Peace Prize today. Proud to have worked with ICAN for the goal of a nuclear free world" before calling on the Tories to take a meaningful stand against nuclear weapons.

However Blackford slammed Corbyn over his statement, asking "where was Labour when the SNP were left to lead the charge against the renewal of trident last year".

Parliament voted in favour of renewing Trident in June 2016, securing a majority of 355 votes that included over half of the Labour MPs at the time.

While Jeremy Corbyn and 47 other Labour MPs voted against renewal, another 41 were absent or abstained, and 140 voted in favour.

The Labour party policy on Trident is also in favour of renewal, however the party whips gave MPs a free vote ahead of the debate in 2016.
