GREGGS have apologised for causing offence online after replacing Jesus, the son of God, with a sausage roll in the Nativity scene.

The bakery chain chose to promote its new advent calendar by releasing the image that caused a small amount of controversy.

While many online saw the humour in it, others were very upset by the image.

Simon Richards called for a boycott of the bakery chain, tweeting: "Please boycott @GreggsOfficial to protest against its sick anti-Christian Advent Calendar. What cowards these people are: we all know that they would never dare insult other religions! They should donate every penny of their profits to @salvationarmyuk."

Greggs responded, stating: "We’re really sorry to have caused any offence, this was never our intention."

The advent calendar is out now in selected Greggs stores and costs £24.
