FANCY a walk? Well, as you might expect there’s now an app for that.

The online guide Walkingworld has, for the first time, released an app with access to its library of more than 7000 walks across Scotland, England and Wales – and further afield.

The app – created in partnership with national mapping agency Ordnance Survey – is available for Android and iOS phones and tablets and can be downloaded for free. Walks can be downloaded to a device for use offline.

It has taken 17 years to build up the library, but this is the first time it has been available as an app. Walkingworld guides are designed to be simple to follow and are built around geo-located waymarks, each of which marks a major decision point on the walk.

Waymarks consist of a photograph – so walkers can identify that they are in the right place – and instructions to the next one. The app allows the walker to switch easily between the waymarks and their location on a map, where their current GPS position is also displayed.

Although most of the walks are in the UK, hundreds are abroad, notably in Spain and France.

The free app offers simple maps while £18 a year gets you the gold standard for walkers – OS Landranger and Explorer maps.
