THE National’s tour of Scotland continues next week with a stop in the Fair City of Perth on Tuesday – and you’re invited.
The editorial team began reaching out to the country’s communities more than a year ago.
Since then, the Roadshow has rolled into Fort William, Paisley, Dunoon, East Kilbride, Orkney, Skye and many more.
At each stop, Scotland’s only pro-independence newspaper has met members of the public keen to share their stories and experiences of life in their area – and their opinions about national and international politics, as well as their aspirations for the country’s future.
Editor Callum Baird says the Perth event is expected to be no different.
He will be on the ground at the Salutation Hotel in South Street for an evening where our popular columnists Lesley Riddoch and Paul Kavanagh (Wee Ginger Dug), are also set to speak.
Preparing for the free-to-attend event, Baird said: “We know from comments from readers online and by letter that people in Perth have a lot to say about current affairs and local issues.
“We also know that they’re clued-up and well-read and we expect the audience at the Salutation Hotel will have plenty on their minds. We look forward to taking their questions, hearing their ideas and getting their takes on what our columnists have to say.
“People of all parties and none are welcome – let’s get a real mix of local opinion and make it an evening to remember.”
The date is organised in conjunction with activists from Yes Perth City, which holds regular events in the local area and beyond as it taps into the country’s independence movement.
Writer Peter A Bell, who is a key member of the group, said: “Yes Perth City is delighted to welcome The National Roadshow to Perth. As part of the Yes movement, we recognise the important role that The National plays in Scotland’s politics.”
He went on: “The National represents a bright new venture in Scottish media. By demonstrating that a different perspective is possible, The National has added a new dimension to our political discourse. Yes Perth City is pleased to play a part in spreading awareness of The National.”
The event begins at 7.30pm on Tuesday.
The date follows our recent visit to Eyemouth and precedes another stop in Aberdeenshire next month, with details to be announced in the coming weeks.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
