CONTEMPORARY art inspired by Brexit is among the highlights at a new four-day festival.

The Outwith Festival opened in Dunfermline yesterday, bringing artists, performers and musicians to the Fife town.

The programme includes new work by celebrated artist David Mach, whose Against the Tide installation is a response to the Leave vote.

Ahead of the show at the Fire Station Creative gallery, the former Turner Prize nominee said: “Against the Tide is my Brexit piece, talking about turning away immigrants and turning away from Europe.”

Mach, from Methil, is amongst several big names on the bill, including local hero Richard Jobson, playwright Alan Bissett and novelist Isla Dewar.

Running until Sunday, the festival also includes performances by more than 35 bands, as well as comedy and theatre.

Family, literature and architecture events have also been programmed.

Chris Foote, events manager of Dunfermline Delivers – one of the teams behind the arts extravaganza – said it celebrates the area’s creativity.

He said: “We are excited to be putting together such a strong line-up of talent.

“Dunfermline is buzzing with creative energy at the moment and we want Outwith to reflect that.”

He went on: “We’re really excited to be welcoming so many different artists, performers, musicians and creative people to Dunfermline for the festival. It’s a great mix of local talent, cutting edge work and exciting ideas.”
