THE curtain went up on a Fringe show yesterday – after thieves stole props and a computer.

Cumbernauld Theatre Company revealed the after-show targeting of its production The Gardener yesterday.

The play, described as “an intimate memoir of growing old and of a life spent in love”, began its run at Edinburgh’s Summerhall venue on August 2 as the annual arts showcase began.

Featuring Crawford Logan as pensioner Frank and Nicola Roy as Eilidh, the hour-long show runs twice a day at the arts centre, which sits at the east end of the Meadows.

But yesterday the company took to Twitter to reveal vital items had been lost.

Using the hashtag #showmustgoon, they wrote that a MacBook, props and CD used in the production had been stolen with 24 shows to go.

Vowing not to be deterred, the team said: “What to do? Our 2.30 and 4.30 shows that’s what.”

They added: “MISSING. Frank’s laptop+sound qs. His garden had a break-in. Won’t stop us.”

Promotional material for the show, which runs until August 27, says: “Frank’s always been a keen gardener but lately he’s been having a bit of trouble looking after himself.

“He’s just not getting out as much since his wife passed away. He’s decided it’s time to go into a retirement home.

“It’s a really nice place, with really nice people, but Frank still misses being outdoors, so he’s started his own gardening appreciation group.

“An intimate portrait of love, life-partner loss and all the minor triumphs and major tribulations of amateur gardening.”
