CONGRATULATIONS to our three caption competition winners who will be off to see Alex Salmond... Unleashed later this month at the Edinburgh Fringe.
We set our readers the challenge of coming up with the best caption for our chosen photo of Donald Trump sitting awkwardly next to Theresa May, and the responses we got did not disappoint.
Our winners, who submitted our favourite captions, are Martin Nelson, Graeme Turton and Yvonne Nelson. Thanks to everybody who entered, although we wouldn’t have been able to print half of the entries!
Here’s the winning captions:
“When Angela Merkel makes you sit at the front of the class” – Martin Nelson
Trump and May do look like two naughty kids who just got a telling off by the grown-up politician in the room.
“I only asked him to put out the bins...” – Graeme Turton
Everyone must now have seen or heard about the infamous One Show interview with Theresa May who, despite describing herself as a feminist, claimed that in the house there were still “girl jobs” and “boy jobs”.
That is exactly what Trump’s face would look like if asked to carry out that particular “boy’s” household chore.
“If I say nothing... he’ll think I don’t speak English” – Yvonne Nelson
Back in July Trump claimed that the Japanese First Lady Akie Abe “doesn’t speak English” after she sat next to him at a dinner during the G20 summit without speaking to him at all. Except... she can. Not only can she speak English, she also used to be a Radio DJ, so probably doesn’t struggle to get a good conversation going.
Abe perhaps acted like she didn’t speak English to avoid having to talk to Trump, something May could be considering in this photo.
Well done to all of our winners! Tickets to see “Alex Salmond... Unleashed” are now sold out.
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
