JEREMY Corbyn reportedly told Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis he would be Prime Minister before December and would then scrap Trident as soon as possible.

Labour’s last manifesto promised to renew the nuclear deterent.

Corbyn addressed a huge crowd at the festival on Saturday, and chants of “Oh Jeremy Corbyn” could be heard on much of the BBC’s wall-to-wall coverage of the event.

Speaking on Sunday, Eavis told an audience at a Q&A session he had asked Corbyn: “When are you going to get rid of Trident?” Corbyn, he said, had replied: “As soon as I can.” He added: “Wasn’t [Corbyn] fantastic? I said to him ‘when are you going to be Prime Minister?’” Corbyn had responded: “In six months.”

Labour said the quotes attributed to Eavis paraphrased a conversation with Corbyn and did not fully reflect the leader’s position or the party’s position on Trident, which remained unchanged from the 2017 manifesto.

A party spokesperson said: “Both Jeremy and the Labour party have long been committed to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, which aims to achieve a nuclear-free world.

“Trident renewal is Labour policy, as spelled out in our manifesto."
