GOALKEEPER Trevor Carson became Stephen Robinson’s fourth Motherwell signing yesterday with more set to follow in the coming days.

Motherwell are close to a deal for another midfielder to add to the earlier captures of Gael Bigirimana, Alex Fisher and Craig Tanner while goalkeeper Russell Griffiths could re-sign following the end of his loan spell from Everton.

Robinson insists there has been no firm approach over top goalscorer Louis Moult or defender Ben Heneghan, who were both linked with Rangers, and he is keen to offer the striker a new contract as he enters the final season of a three-year deal.

Robinson was speaking as Motherwell introduced their new main sponsor, McEwan Fraser Legal, and he soon completed another deal as 29-year-old Northern Ireland B international Carson joined for an undisclosed fee from Hartlepool.

Robinson said: “I’ve been chasing Trevor all summer so to get it over the line is fantastic. Our chief scout Martin Foyle has been brilliant and we look forward to working with him.

“We have agreed a deal for another attacking midfielder.

“I am well aware that we need defenders in as well, I think we played with Ben Heneghan as our only recognised defender towards the end of the season,” added Robinson.

“We are very close to agreeing a deal for Russell to come in as well.”

|Moult has scored 36 goals after being bought from Wrexham and this summer would be the natural time for Motherwell to sell the 25-year-old.

Robinson said: “There will be interest, there is no doubt, you don’t score the amount of goals he has and make the contribution he has made over the last couple of years without there being interest, but there has been nothing firm.

“I am quite hopeful Louis will still be our player at the start of the season, which is what I want as a manager, but we are a club that won’t stand in people’s way if clubs come in with the right money.”
