HARRY Kane was thrilled to score what will go down in history as the last winning goal at White Hart Lane as Tottenham marked the end of an era with a 2-1 win against Manchester United.
The final game in the ground’s 118-year history saw Spurs secure second place in the Premier League, their highest-placed finish since the 1960s, and end the league campaign unbeaten at home.
Victor Wanyama headed the hosts into an early lead and Kane added a second after the break, before Wayne Rooney scored for United.
Kane said: “What a way to finish. We wanted to win so badly. I’d thought beforehand that to score the winning goal or something like that would be special, and for it to happen is just amazing. We’re disappointed after losing out on the title again, but we’re growing and getting better – third, second and hopefully next season we’ll be number one.”
Tottenham are heading to Wembley next season ahead of moving into a new stadium on the White Hart Lane site.
While they remained unbeaten at White Hart Lane this term, they won just one of their five games at Wembley this season – four “home” games in Europe and the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.
Midfielder Dele Alli said: “You hear a lot about it not really being good for us, but I think what happened in the Champions League was not down to Wembley – it was down to our own performance. .
“It’s an unbelievable stadium and we just have to make sure we feel comfortable there.
It’s going to be our home next season, so we have to make it as much of a fortress as White Hart Lane has been.”
Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said: “It was a very good performance, and now we focus on the last two games.
“It’s fantastic that we have achieved second position. We’re disappointed but at the same time it is fantastic for us and to be unbeaten at White Hart Lane in the last season here is something to be happy with.
United’s Jose Mourinho again made a host of changes as he focuses on the Europa League final, United’s only possible route into next season’s Champions League.
He said “I’m fine with what we had in terms of individual performances. The two goals were bad goals that we conceded, but the team was not used to each other.”
Asked what United needed to do to compete next season, Mourinho said: “I don’t want to think about it, I want to think about the final,” before walking off camera.
Hull were relegated from the top flight in feeble fashion when they lost 4-0 at Crystal Palace.
