TORY General Election candidate Thomas Haddow hasn’t always been his party’s biggest fan.
Back in 2010, the Tesco manager, now looking to unseat the SNP’s Chris Stephen in Glasgow South West told friends on Facebook: “The Tories ruined this country once and they will do it again given the chance.” In another post he urged “C’mon Britain let’s keep the Tories out of power.”
He also criticised the Lib Dems and pined for Gordon Brown after his resignation.
Haddow, who last week narrowly missed out on winning a seat on Glasgow City Council, would have been 18 when he wrote those posts.
Raised in Govan, he was also the Tory candidate in Glasgow Pollok for 2016’s Scottish Parliament elections, where he told the Scot Talk podcast he joined the Tories because, “something struck a chord with me. I quite liked Ruth Davidson, the leader.
“Just something about her spoke to me and resonated with me on a personal level, and I felt okay, I’m going to follow this up.”
A Tory spokesman said: “These comments were made several years ago, and Thomas no longer holds these views. He has always believed that Scotland is stronger as part of the United Kingdom, and believes now that only the Scottish Conservatives can lead the fightback against the SNP.”
An SNP spokesman said: “We agree with Tory candidate Thomas Haddow that the Tories should not be given another chance to ruin the country.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
