AWARD-WINNING Scottish milliner Sally-Ann Provan has built her international reputation upon her distinctive designs.

Prior to establishing her label, Provan attained an honours degree studying jewellery after which she dallied in museum sculpture, jewellery design and acting as a TV extra.

Seeking to expand her expertise, she then trained in couture millinery and theatrical millinery with the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

After her training, Provan made the ambitious move to begin her label with support from the Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust.

Her talent was instantly recognised by the industry and she was awarded the Dickins and Jones Award for Fashion Accessories. Provan has since been nominated for two Scottish Wedding Awards and recently came fourth in an international millinery competition in which she was the only European finalist.

Based in her studio in Edinburgh, she prides herself on hand-making elegant, modern millinery using a mixture of old and new practices.

Provan creates two capsule collections a year. Her current spring/summer capsule range, entitled Harmony, was inspired by the Japanese Ikebana philosophy of balance, harmony and serenity.

Provan explains: “For me, it’s all about considering shape, and the design and placement of trims throughout the collection to bring a harmony and balance of form and surface detail.”

The label also offers collections which are available all year round from the studio or online shop.

In addition to her collections, Provan offers a bespoke service which allows her to design unique headpieces for private clients. In order to ensure each client receives the time, undivided attention and privacy to try different ideas in a relaxing atmosphere, she works by appointment only at the studio. For those further afield, she also provides consultations by email, Skype and Facetime.

Through her bespoke service Provan has designed hats for various events ranging from weddings and garden parties to theatre and television. She has also built up an impressive list of clientele including First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, the BBC and Scottish Opera.
