LIKE a lamb to the slaughter, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie came off second best when he decided to mix it with a fierce ram while visiting a farm in Fife yesterday.

Not even the best spin doctors could pull the wool over people’s eyes about this disastrous photo opportunity – Rennie got a tupping from a horned chap who wasn’t for backing down.

It was the old Labour bruiser Denis Healey who quipped that famous line that being criticised by Tory grandee Sir Geoffrey Howe was like being savaged by a dead sheep, but the member of the ovine species which Rennie encountered yesterday was very much alive and certainly rambunctious.

Rennie has form with farm animals on his pre-election tours – last year he was memorably filmed with a couple of amorous pigs in the background and in 2015 he was pictured with an adorable lamb. It’s very unlikely that yesterday’s big ram was that same wee lamb, but at least it distracted Rennie from his normal SNP-baaaad routine.

There are those who say that visiting a sheep farm was appropriate as the LibDem policies are mutton dressed as lamb but we couldn’t possibly comment.

Still at least Rennie hasn’t performed as many ewe-turns as Theresa May. And at least the LibDem leader managed to laugh off his latest trip to the funny farm.
