THE National Roadshow arrives in Dumfries today on the latest leg of our second anniversary tour of Scotland and we want all our loyal supporters and new readers to join us at the Loreburne Shopping Centre to tell us all about the issues that matter to them.
Our editor Callum Baird and his reporting team will be in the centre from 10am until 4pm giving away free Nationals, so come on down and give us your banter, even if you are still in the No camp.
Baird will also join the Wee Ginger Dug at a special event organised with the help of Annandale Yes Group at Lockerbie Town Hall at 7.30pm and anyone is welcome to come along.
We know Dumfries voted No by 66 per cent to 34 per cent in 2014 but we feel the times they are a-changin’ judging from the positive reaction so far to our roadshow hitting the town.
Local MP Richard Arkless feels the same way: “I am very aware the people of Dumfries and Galloway voted No by a significant majority in 2014. As time passes and people witness the UK Government’s failure to engage with the Scottish Government in any meaningful way, more and more people are telling me that they have changed their minds. I’ve spoken to dozens of people who have moved from No to Yes, and been emailed by hundreds more.”
Editor Baird said: “Dumfries might not be the most Yes friendly area of Scotland but we feel there is a change coming judging by the response we’ve had so far to our roadshow.
“It’s a shame Oliver Mundell apparently told the local newspaper he couldn’t make it because we were hoping we could convince him to go from No to Yes!”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
