COUNCIL workers will march against service cuts and privatisation in Glasgow today.

Action by trade unionists comes less than two months before the local government elections, where Labour will seek to retain their hold of Glasgow City Council against an SNP challenge.

The Glasgow Trades Union Council is urging the council not to proceed with the full privatisation of its IT services and to retain a janitor in all schools.

It has also hit out at “cuts by stealth” in health services through the non-filling of vacant posts and potential further privatisations in catering services at the city’s further education institutions.

Speaking ahead of the march, which will go from Glasgow Green to George Square, in front of the council buildings, a spokesperson for the Unison union – which blames the cuts on the UK Government – said: “As public sector jobs go, that means fewer services for the people of Glasgow.

“Another £14 million is to be cut from social care and £3m from home care, which will hit the most vulnerable.

“Spending in our schools on kids with additional support needs is under pressure with inadequate staffing levels and training programmes.

“There is plenty of money in our society, it’s just in the wrong hands.”
