A HIGHLAND publisher has given a university one of its biggest ever donations – its entire archive collection of every work it has published since it was founded 2002.

The library from the award-winning Sandstone Press will be available to students and staff at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), as well as researchers in the wider community.

UHI, which prides itself on being both locally based and rooted within Highland communities, as well as having an international reach, welcomed the donation.

Account director Gary Campbell, said: “We are delighted to be able to accept the archive from Sandstone Press. Such donations build stronger relationships with the local community and allow students and researchers access to material which has been created in the Highlands, but is of international significance.”

Sandstone Press is based in Dingwall and prints books across a wide range of genres and subject matters. Their non-fiction works include topics such as the environment, mountain rescue, science, history and current affairs, which will prove an invaluable resource for the university.

Robert Davidson, the company’s founder and managing director, said: “We are highly conscious of our unique location and of our position within the Highland economy and within the Scottish economy. We are equally conscious of the presence and growing reputation of the UHI. Our alliance to preserve these archives for future researchers seems significant to me and, personally, I would wish for nothing more than for Sandstone Press to be associated with this dynamic modern institution.”

The works will be housed in the Highland Archive Centre in Inverness. Ian Murray, chief executive of High Life Highland which operates the centre, said: “The expertise and storage capabilities of the Highland Archive Centre will ensure that the collection is available to researchers for generations to come.”
