VETERAN broadcaster and journalist James Naughtie, broadcaster Kirsty Wark and crime writer Val McDermid are amongst those named as one of 60 new Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE).

Also elected to the RSE are Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne, businesswoman and founder of gluten-free Genius Foods, and Dame Elish Angiolini, formerly the Solicitor General and Lord Advocate of Scotland. The Duke of Cambridge has been elected as the Society’s Royal Honorary Fellow.

Founded in 1783, the RSE has some 1,600 Fellows with a range of expertise enabling the Society to offer advice to government and parliament, mentor aspiring entrepreneurs and engage young people and the public through educational events.

Sir Bill Gammell and Martin Gilbert of Aberdeen Asset Management are Fellows elected from the business world, while theatre director Maggie Kinloch and artist Alison Watt represent the arts.

RSE president Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell said: “Each newly elected Fellow has been nominated on their exceptional and extensive achievements; it is a great honour to welcome such a range of outstanding individuals to the Fellowship.

"They will strengthen the Society’s capacity to advance excellence across all areas of public life in Scotland and further afield.”
